It all started early friday morning. I thought I was just having some random back pain at 2 a.m. so I took some tylenol and then went back to bed. At 7 a.m. I was still having some major discomfort so I called my friend Emily to see if she thought I was in labor. She was undecided. I didn't know what to think of my general discomfort, but I had a sneaky suspicion it was labor pain. So by 8 a.m. I woke Jeff by saying, "What do you think about us having Ezra today?" But I still wasn't sure I was really in labor.
Now my mom had all of us kids 2 weeks before our due date. She had called to warn me a few days earlier that if I thought I might be in labor, I probably was. With her first she didn't realize she was in labor until it was almost too late. And since my baby Ezra was breech she felt it very important to lecture me on taking possible labor pains quite seriously. Like any good daughter I took her advice as a grain of salt.
By 10 a.m. I had explained to Jeff I wasn't sure I was in labor, maybe I just had the flu or something. So I went back to bed. When I awoke at noon I still felt crappy. At 1 p.m. I called the dr's office and left a message for the nurse saying, "I feel pretty horrible. . .is this just what it feels like to be almost 38 weeks pregnant?" Right after I got off the phone Jeff came in to tell me he had made dinner plans for us at 6 p.m. Hummm I thought to myself, that skull must be a little thicker than I had ever thought.
So after the message I decided I should time my contractions. . . 6-7 mins apart! Huh weird. They weren't very painful though so I really had to pay attention to them so I could time them. So I got up and packed a bag for the hospital.
By 2 p.m. I settled down on the couch to time my contractions and make sure they didn't go away with rest. I listened to Jeff in his office chatting on the phone. Contractions: 3-4 mins apart. 2:30 Jeff comes out of the office and says, "What is the bag for?" I reply, "I think we better go to the hospital because we are having a baby today". Jeff stands motionless and slowly questions me, "Really?"
"Yes honey. . .really. And you probably ought to cancel those dinner plans"
With that Jeff swings into a panicked mess. Running around the house gathering cameras, batteries, cords, back up camera's, bags, cloths and yelling random questions to me about what he needs to pack. I can hear him slamming drawers closed and dropping stuff everywhere he goes.
Finally, we head for the car, where Jeff slams me in the door. . .starts backing up with the garage closed. . .and he looks at me with all seriousness and says, "If I black out just grab the wheel". He was hilarious, he was such a mess. I couldn't help but laugh at him.
At close to 3p.m. the nurse calls me back and tells me she thinks I'm in labor. I told her we were already in the car headed to the doctors office. She tells me to just go straight to the hospital and check in.
Here is the video I made of our little adventure. And I would love to proudly introduce you all to Ezra Jason (after our brothers) Lee. Born March 19, two and a half weeks early.
